hamerhead Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 Well, it's here. Just got it in the door, haven't touched it - it's pictured exactly how I picked it up: and this...... Notice anything? No strap buttons. No screw holes for strap buttons. Never had 'em. It's 55 years old. Two knobs appear to have been changed at some point, but I've seen 1 year old guitars that looked far worse. Absolutely stunning. I'm kinda scared to have it in my house.
murkat Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 awesomestunningbeautifuland the popcorn flek in the maple top, bonus.winner.
Lockbody Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 That's an amazing find.Needs a Kahler. What he said! Amazing find! But, you wouldn't want to route it for a Kahler. That would be stupid.Put a Wonderbar on it instead.
crunchee Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 Woah Momma! That invokes Slim Harpo and Emily Remler at the same time! Let me be the first to offer you and/or your friend the obligatory HFC price of Tree Fitty. Hell, I'll make it Fore Fitty!
crunchee Posted May 19, 2015 Posted May 19, 2015 Wow. That's nice and in nice shape! +1! From what I'm seeing in the photos here, that guitar can't get much cleaner, IMO. The lack of strap buttons was probably a contributing factor, you can't do Elvis moves easily without a strap! That also might (still) be a good way to keep people from 'borrowing' the guitar, too!
hamerhead Posted May 20, 2015 Author Posted May 20, 2015 I lied. I haven't checked the serial number, but I'm being told by a family member it's actually a 1963. See what happens when you pee yourself over a guitar? Dammit.UPDATE: Nevermind. I checked the FON (Factory Order Number) ink-stamped on the inside of the back and it is indeed a 1960 - an 'R' prefix followed by four digits, followed by two digits (Gibson really f***ed their serial numbers....). After plugging it in an giving it a whirl, I will continue peeing myself. It sounds even better than it looks, and I haven't changed the strings yet.
Tres Aardvarks Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 damn, just daaaaaaaaaaaaaamn. That's pretty incredible!!!!!
Biz Prof Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Amazing find. If Billy Gibbons had posted this on here, we'd assume he was spinning a yarn. Happy for you; enjoy breaking it in!
scottcald Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 I'm kinda scared to have it in my house.I'd be glad to keep it for you, you know, just to quell your fears. That is gorgeous. Please make a video or audio recording so we can hear it.
G Man Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Absolutely gorgeous, congrats and a great find. Boy, I sure hope someday my ship comes in, that has me all giggety-giggety just looking at it.
hamerhead Posted May 30, 2015 Author Posted May 30, 2015 To be clear - it's not mine. I was asked to give it the once-over for the family that wishes to sell it. Big mistake, it turns out. I was given first dibs and decided quickly (based on info gathered here and across the universe) that I couldn't comfortably swing it. But..........After running it through the old Vibrolux, and also hearing it as someone else ran it through the old Vibrolux, I am woozy. If you could take all that is good in the world and wad it up into a guitar-shaped hunk of awesome, that's what it sounds like. Like jamming fine silk and spun gold wrapped into bacon in your earholes. Just epic. I am not worthy.I am very close to the crossroads. I will likely never have an opportunity like this again, and most of the stars have already aligned properly to get it here......But that last star is an evil M****rF****r.
tbonesullivan Posted May 30, 2015 Posted May 30, 2015 wooowoo! that is one awesome find! Just a little Gibson pump polish on a rag once in a while, and it should keep looking awesome. I can't imagine how good that sounds, even UNplugged.
Duplex Dave Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 Just now seeing this post. And, when you got to the "no strap pins" I also peed myself a little.I hope you can align that last star, I need to go clean up now...
django49 Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 Good Grief! MAKE that last star happen or regret it forever!
