  1. Some of you asked about what’s that white V with one pickup and a semi-hollow body, so this is for you gearheads: A friend of mine, who isn’t exactly a luthier but is skilled with his hands and has built several guitars, built this guitar for me, based on a 67 V. It’s built from leftovers and low-grade wood, so nothing fancy here. It’s all cheap mahogany, both sides of the body are rather thick planks, not even one piece per side, so it’s a semi-hollow that actually isn’t, as there’s no special acoustic considerations whatsoever. And the F-holes are just for the looks, of course. Ah, and being the body so light, it tends to neck-dive. The fretboard is made of the cheapest wood he had in his workshop. It’s maple, but intended for furniture, not guitars. The best part is the finish. The thick coat of ivory white paint he used is very resistant, and it has aged beautifully. Now, the hardware is something else. I installed it, myself. It has Gotoh locking tuners, a TonePros TOM bridge with roller saddles and a steel trussrod cover with “Custom” engraved on it, which I bought on eBay. The pickup deserves to be mentioned separately. It’s a Nova Omnia G6 H, German-made. After experimenting with different combinations, I ended up wiring the coils in parallel. Perfect tone, not so hot, rich and focused. For more information about these pickups, click here: https://www.nova-pickups.com/products/omnia?variant=48045200179537 Luckily, this aberrant guitar resulted in being a very comfortable instrument which feels great in my hands and that also sounds amazing. It has become my favorite guitar to play. As a final touch, I found a sticker of an ugly duck in a public bathroom, took it with me and placed it on the back of the headstock of this guitar. So, that’s it. Hope you enjoyed the story and the guitar p0rn. 👊😎

  2. And I also have a Rick Nielsen signature that I actually play. I might even gig with it at some point: Again, the white V is always at hand, as you can see. 🤷🏻‍♂️

  3. You guys are really messing this up. Look, those guitars are horrible. You need to sell them as quickly as possible. They are costing you money in space, heating and cooling. You need to sell these for $350 ASAP! DM me if you have a BOGO promotion. : )

  4. No, you only die once. You live everyday, hopefully like it's your last. Zorrow, sell them. A guitar in the case not used is not a guitar.

  5. Or leave it as is, editing the title, to not hurt sensibilities. That finally was MY choice.

  6. Well, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. I felt like Bart Simpson reaching for the electrified cupcake on top of the fridge. Every time I just wanted to watch football they wanted to make it into a social event inviting all their "Karens" in their social network over, all dressed up in a jersey and jeans, all chattering about things that don't matter. You know, "Oh, your hair is so beautiful." "Oh Thank you, you should try my new beauty consultant...." yadda, yadda. I just wanted to lay around in my sweatpants, scratch where I wanted when I wanted, and drink beer. So, had enough of the Karens. I mean, I may as well have been married to Rob B. And that Keytar requires wearing spandex so certainly is gay. I get your point. Spot on.

  8. "Playing" isn't the word I would use, honestly. It was more pick one up, noodle a little bit, realize that I suck, have the inner dialogue about how I wasted so many years not practicing or playing with other (actual) musicians), regret picking it up in the first place, and then hang it back up. As for the "difference," if there is one, it's a subtle one. In my case I lost interest in the instrument itself and got real with myself about the prospect of it ever being worth my time going forward. In @zorrow's case, he realized he's lost interest in a couple of his instruments and he'd rather see them played by someone who would get the enjoyment out of them that he wishes he did. Either way, their days are numbered.

  10. Didn’t realize you were married to women before…. But I get it. I don’t miss my first wife AT ALL thanks to my second wife. More to your point, I don’t think I’d miss selling guitars if I switched to the keytar… 😜

  11. Sell them. Edit to expand thought: You don’t play them and you have no plans to play them. Seems obvious to me unless you just want them as art or some sort of potential investment. For me, 100%, sell them. I realize that my opinion here will surprise no one.

  12. I grew up in the Bay area but was really never a country rock fan, but since my mom's passing, I am totally convinced that the song "Simple man" was a song written as a direct message from her to me. ❤️

  13. Here is the link to the archived thread: As was brought up in the above archived thread, it was discussed that the California Tweed was first designed with the Jensen Blackbird 100 12 inch speaker. A few years later the Blackbird 40 came out and replaced the 100 in all the cabs and combos. My friend, Lynn Burke, said I wanted the 40 when I asked if he had a 100 BB combo left over. I simply wanted the 100 because it was what was originally in the design and, as brought up in the above thread, it seemed the 40 was poo-pooed on the web as a money grab by Mesa. I got the Cali Tweed with the 40 and always wondered what the difference in tone would be if it had the 100. Well, a used California Tweed came up with the BB100s in it. No one is selling the original cabs or used BB 100s so you have to wonder. So I jumped at the chance to get it. I studied the photos carefully as there are a few clues which speaker is in the 2x12 cabs. They are semi open back so the speaker magnets are visible. The problem with buying new ones is the sellers haven't updated their photos and they appear to be the 100 but when you call and ask they say it's rated for 80 watts which would be the 2 BB40s. Someone had spray painted an egyption eye, can't remember what it's called, on the back of the cab so when I called I mentioned the defacing paint job and the guy said it's the only one they have in stock. So other than the magnet being visible as the BB100 the other difference is the "4" on the plug jack is much larger on the original BB 100 cabs. "4" meaning 4 ohms. So it all pointed to the correct cab and it arrived oddly unscathed by UPS. My first impression is that the BB 100 is not as bright as the 40. Not a bad thing since I had noticed I was turning down the tone knob on the guitars more than usual when plugged in the BB 40 combo. I texted Lynn Burke and told him about the purchase and he said again that there is no way to break up the BB 100 with that amp. Which was also proven in this video: The reason I say it was proven is a viewer made this comment: "So the early combo and cabs had the 100w versions which are great speakers but to my ear, it’s MUCH cleaner even on the lower wattage settings with the gain and master cranked. Makes sense given the higher wattage rating, I’m guessing it takes a lot more power to push the 100w version and thus sounds super clean. Don’t get me wrong, it still breaks up but just not as much as yours sounds. Another thing I notice is the bass on the 100w is insane. I have to keep the bass control near zero because it gets crazy woofy and not in a cool fuzz way unless I’m playing with the master volume at a loud setting. I’ve heard this a common complaint and so it seems Mesa made the decision to switch to the 40w version around mid-2021 or so. The 100w sounds really good for cleans but is not the best for getting that cranked tweed sound. Thanks again, I think I’m going to look for a used version of the 40w to swap it out and give it a shot." Even after reading the above comment I still wanted to try it. I will put it through the paces next week and maybe swap out my 2 BB 40s for the BB 100s and put the 100 in the combo. Or maybe not. Maybe I just need to practice more. Will update.

  15. I’m playing more than ever. I’m writing and recording new songs, practicing the setlist of my band, getting ready for our upcoming shows, and I’m also following a lesson plan to sharpen my chops.

  16. Doesn't seem like Hamer Standards are going down at the moment. There are afew on the market and those that are a couple grand more than a few years ago it seems. The red standards is a nice one for sure and I'm sure someone would jump, but once it's gone it's gone. You have that nice Korina Standard though so likely a little redundant

  17. The white V is actually the one I play the most, closely followed by my Korina Standard. Both are my workhorses:

  18. A simpler time. No cel phones. Before the food industry made us all fat and inflamed. And you could display the Rebel Flag in all its glory in Oakland, CA. I hated this band when I was a teen now it makes me crave those days.

  19. I loved them in the 70s. Such good guitarists. Ed King was a monster and a better slide player than Gary, IMO. But all 4 were great in their own way. When I lived in south Florida in the 70s, some local rock station played Freebird at midnight every Friday or Saturday, I forget which. Every car would tune in and blast it all together. Those were the days. We didn’t hate Freebird then, it was considered a guitar master class. Gary on slide and Allen’s one take solo…and add in Gaines on the Live album. Thanks for the nostalgia tour, @Saul Goodman.

  23. Holy frijoles! If I could still play, I would be seriously interested in one or both of those! I'm going through the same thing. After spending a lifetime buying, selling, trading up, need that color, that one plays great, I always wanted one of those as a kid, etc. I had a great collection, perfect for me. Then physical/health events robbed me of my playing ability. I've let 3 of my 25ish collection go and I have 5 on Reverb right now but it's going to get harder and harder because after those every guitar I have left brings back a lot of memories and has more meaning to me. I will add this: after I let those first 3 go, I did not REALLY miss them and in my past whenever I've sold something usually I look back a few weeks or months later and wonder why I didn't do it sooner.

  26. This came up in a conversation after I purchased my DuoTone. From what I've read the model just didn't catch on. So sales where limited. Any guesses on how many 3 holers and the the F hole Duotones where made?

  27. That seems to be a big difference in what you keep and what you get rid of. But you still have to decide…

  28. those would be tough to replace!, I'd keep them given the difficulty/cost of replacement, and the likelyhood of someday wishing you hadn't sold. Do you need the cash? - don't sell and then buy something that depreciates rapidly: always use different funding for a new purchase if it's for something that will depreciate, I know a guy who sold his real Bassman to buy a hot tub, the hot tub is worth zero now, and I'm sure he sometimes thinks of the Bassman he could have kept. 8-9 years ago I sold some gear to finance a mtn bike for racing, -terrible investment!, it was mostly not very special gear, but I think the '89 Jem $$ may have gone into that fund.

  32. Enough of the "thread shaming" and back to the topic at hand... Once your head lets these thoughts or realizations in, it's hard to go back. Ask me how I know. I described my guitar hording a while back as being akin to big game trophy hunting. Hanging all of those guitars on my wall looked cool as fuck, but it was a constant reminder to me that I wasn't playing anymore, and all of those wonderful instruments hanging there collecting dust weren't helping anyone. What started out as a hope that the guitar being out of the cases and in my face would inspire me to play actually backfired miserably. Once that light bulb lit in my brain, it never went out.

  34. That's why I sold off my 'name' (USA-made and/or collectible) guitars and amps several years back...they were desirable, but the collector 'status' started to make playing them casually less and less enjoyable, less 'fun', with more of a financial 'responsibility' for keeping them. So I got rid of those, and I now have a small gathering of quirky musical mutts that I can play and use to my heart's content, with no regrets.

  35. I was looking for “psychological support from the community” —🤷🏻‍♂️— but it seems you took it the wrong way. Now, given I think you were impolite, I will tell you that, if you feel teased, that’s your perception. You also had the choice of not replying, but you decided to do it. Are you okay? Is life treating you well? In any case, just tried to delete the topic, because I’ve been around for a loooong time and I have never had any issues with anyone here, so if this post irritates you, it’s maybe smarter for me just to avoid any trouble. I couldn’t find how to delete it though. Can anybody help me? Is @hikarateboy still the admin? Or is any expert around who can tell me how to delete the post? Thanks again!

  42. I did want to mention that you can hide an Apple airtag under the neck pickup of a guitar so you can track it in shipping; there are also some Android compatible versions that look to be thinner and might be a better fit (the airtag can be a little tall depending on the neck pickup routing depth). The airtag would have fit in the control cavity, but I'm not sure if Hamer's shielding paint would have affected the airtag signal. A big thank you to Dr Bear for mentioning airtags; it's easier to look something up on your phone and get a locational update rather than depend on the tracking info.
