While cleaning out some family memorabilia, I stumbled across this scratched-up photo from late spring, 1970, taken at Chanute Air Force base, Illinois during a base-wide talent show. I'd only been there for about a month so that explains the skinhead hair style; it was growing back following basic training in San Antonio. I was 19 at the time. I'd noted the bands and clubs in nearby Champaign-Urbana previously in this space, and maybe even this performance, but perusing the photo was interesting experience in sussing out the gear that we used. Dude on the left owned the sunburst Gibson thinline and Fender Deluxe amp (Was it a blackface? I can't tell). Bass player had some kind of Fender, I used the Airman's Club's red Fender Mustang. Amps for the bass player and me were also club inventory---solid-state Baldwins with multi-colored slider switch controls. The club also had a Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face (red circular case). The general who commanded the educational wing was at the show, as was the base commander (full bird colonel). And I got us disqualified for humping my amp, (like Hendrix in Monterey Pop ), but the general was laughing his ass off. Jeezus...that was 55 years ago10 points

He sent me an unhinged rant threatening me with "severe legal action" and named a lawyer or two "who never loses a case" because of a comment I made somewhere (clearly nothing actionable, and also 100% truthful, and honestly, not really negative), and told me I needed to delete all mention of him anywhere. I did nothing of the sort and just blocked him, because there's a lot of sand somewhere I'm sure he needs to pound. That kind of bullying might frighten somebody who isn't familiar with how defamation law works, but that's not me.5 points

Anyone checked out the new buying & selling site called Resyn? I think its past time that we have a new place to buy and sell gear. And, NO FEES. Not sure how that will work. Plus, what protections you get from getting damaged stuff. I just signed up... we'll see how it goes. https://www.resyn.com/4 points

Trailer is at the link. A review: We hear about how Devo first made their mark by becoming part of the extended punk family at CBGB, where the Dead Boys welcomed them by beating them up, and where, under the influence of the Ramones, they realized that their songs sounded better when played faster. There were celebrities in the audience (like Jack Nicholson), and Mothersbaugh tells a great story about how after a performance of “Uncontrollable Urge,” John Lennon came up to him and sang right into his face, “Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah-YEAH!,” mimicking the song’s “She Loves You”-in-the-loony-bin hook. David Bowie became interested in the band in 1976, and said he wanted to produce them, but he didn’t follow through, maybe because he was in the middle of his own lost weekend. Their first album was ultimately produced by Brian Eno, who did a masterful job of coaxing out their subversive catchiness.3 points

I just don't want anything to do with him. I've been down this road. It will be years. He's full of shit.3 points

Hey Gang! I have never seen them live and am looking forward to it. I did one show opening for RZ band about 10 years ago but I doubt he would remember and I have no continued management connection. Anybody work with their management or techs and feel like pming me? It’s a County Fair in upstate NY so the setting for the gig May make it more, or less, conducive to having extra time or positive energy lol. I don’t need a ticket or guest list, just looking to say hi and admire a guitar or two, but I can certainly also do that from a distance. For the die-hards, What do you love about the CT shows and what should I be expecting? TIA2 points

Hello chaps, I was having a crack at learning a solo today, Roxann by Jay Graydon. Hope you enjoy it! I’m loving Summery Sessiony Yacht Rock so this is one of a few solos I’m working on - I reckon I’m 90% there at the moment The guitar is Austin’s old Centaura Custom Order with the figured body. Anyone remember this one? Tones are out of a Fractal FM3 straight into a DAW. I’m happy with it for a couple of hours practice between calls and meetings and stuff I reckon I’ll have it down over the next week or so! Cheers all and hope you enjoy it! Ben. P.S.I dropped Ed Rechts a line earlier of FB Messenger - he said some nice things about my playing last year so I wanted to share another ‘Jays’ playing with him - but the messages aren’t getting though so I was a bit concerned… his thread on the HFC is quiet since June… P.P.S. VALIDAAAAAAAAAAATE MEEEEEEEE!!!2 points

Bumping this to the top. It looks like someone else bought and returned this guitar. It's now at the Villa Park (Chicago) GC location. Still listed at the same price with no disclosure of the numerous defects.2 points

SOLD $5500- I bought this about a year ago. I believe it's chambered because it's light. Excellent condition, near mint- I can't find any marks of any kind or fret wear. The neck is fairly thick, thicker than any 2000s Hamer that I've played. Private message me for questions. We can work out shipping if necessary for the actual cost.1 point

^^^Played that off-base USO place as well with another throw-together group. For obvious reasons, lineups of temporary bands changed often. I managed to get my cheap Teisco shipped to me, and used it for the duration. Its feedback proclivities could be utilized for sustain, but I wasn't no Ted Nugent. On one weekend we played an afternoon squadron party at the NCO club then a dance at the USO club that night 'coz some band cancelled. That's eight hours of gigging in one day. I didn't have callouses on my fingertips so they ended up getting blisters. That was obviously the most exhausting musical experience of my life.. Staggered back to my barracks, threw the Teisco on the top bunk, and collapsed on the lower bunk. Didn't even get my shoes off.1 point

Cent needs a reversed head stock and the solo needs some ill-suited, over-the-top whammy bar histrionics! Nice work, mate!!1 point

Guitar Center does not alter their descriptions, unless a guitar suffers major damage (i.e. neck break). On several occasions I returned items and specifically pointed to the defects not mentioned. Guess what - they relisted with the same old descriptions.1 point

I'm very much looking forward to it, can't imagine it will be anything but a hoot.1 point

Well, Now I have both books in house, and man, there is so much information in there. I'm also AMAZED at how the Beauty of the burst was put together THIRTY years ago. How the hell did they manage to get that many bursts photographed? Did they travel to the bursts, or did they have some big Les Paul burst convention? At the time, those guitars were all about 35 years old, and now they are almost TWICE as old. I'm sure many of them are now more faded, especially those that see a lot of use, like Pearly Gates. Next up I definitely need to pick up some Willie G stuff.1 point

Wow! Being quite ig-nert, I learn something every day! 424 GAIN STAGE – JHS Pedals I didn't even know the "424 Sound" was a thing (I just knew my broke-college self couldn't afford one BITD).1 point

I’d buy it for $1k and then have it re-fretted, a new nut put on, and see if my tech could fix the inlay issues. The buckle rash and bad binding repair wouldn’t bother me for $1k. $1,800 is cracked, tho…1 point

Thanks for the heads-up. It was in my My List on Amazon forever, but by the time I got around to it they had taken it off Free With Prime and it was a rental. I have to save these (music documentaries) for the odd occasion I'm home alone. NOBODY will suffer through them with me. 😑1 point

Do you have an iPad lying around? GarageBand works on them too and the screens are bigger. Used ones are mad cheap at OWC, I have bought several and they’ve all been great with battery life, great deals. I have one set up with a 49 key usb keyboard for the wife to noodle on with piano or organ sounds from GB. You could obv use a simple setup like that (with a iRig or usb interface) for a multitrack notepad. 👍1 point

If I really wanted an Epiphone, I'd look for one of the old Japanese-made Elite/Elitist models from about twenty years ago. DGS has had a few LP models recently, priced at about a Grand each.1 point

I've been racking my brains to come up with a contribution to this thread. I can't think of a single guitar that I can point to as one I'm really regretting letting go of. Sure, there are some I wouldn't mind having back for two reasons: nostalgia being the most potent of those motivations. The other is bit more involved. In short, I'd like to have a number of them back to see how I get on with them now. I think we all grow as players over the decades and I like to delude myself into believing that I've evolved to a degree as a player as well. My inability to truly bond with a guitar back in the day could have been rooted in my then less-developed technique and theory. I'd like to test that theory.1 point

GarageBand seems like an obvious answer. It has a lot of stuff, but you don't have to download or use it all. I saw a recommendation for something called MultitrackDAW. That's the first I've heard of it - may be what you need. Also recalled that Voice Memos was supposed to get multitrack capability, but it looks like that requires at least an iPhone 16 Pro. Looks like Roland released something called ZenTracker in 2021. No idea if it's any good or still available.1 point

Yep, buyer beware of Eddie. Ordered a Nielsen korina. Promised me 6 months. Almost 2 years later I had to contact BBB because he blocked me and refused to refund. BBB came through, thankfully.1 point

Now you know three. Paid him $2,900 a year ago Monday. He's never sent me a invoice, any pics or contacted me without me contacting him first. Stopped responding to my texts about two months ago. I blocked him on FaceBook and told him to call me when the guitar is finished. He's gone on a rant (but subsequently pulled it) about how he's just one man and blah, blah, blah. He promised me six months to a year. He's done nothing. Ian Anderson all over again.0 points
